The Safeguarding and Inclusion Team currently consists of the Team Manager for Safeguarding and Inclusion, a systemic family psychotherapist and an inclusion support officer. This team is supported by 2 part-time administrative staff.

Safeguarding and Inclusion Team Manager

The Team Manager for Safeguarding and Inclusion is the local authority lead officer for safeguarding matters within Education.

The Team Manager works with all Bracknell Forest schools to ensure they are confident with regard to their duties for safeguarding children and young people and that they have robust arrangements in place for dealing with child protection issues that might arise.

The Team Manager is a member of the Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) and provides all schools with safeguarding updates both nationally and from the LSCB.

The Team Manager also works with schools to offer advice and to monitor and audit Section 11 arrangements, school cultures, policies, procedures, practice and record keeping in relation to safeguarding.

The Team Manager is available to schools to deliver group training and training programmes for child protection designated school staff.

The Team Manager for Safeguarding and Inclusion line manages both the Inclusion Support Officer (ISO) and the systemic family psychotherapist

In addition to the safeguarding responsibilities, the Team Manager for Safeguarding and Inclusion also has responsibility for Inclusion. This involves chairing the Fair Access Panel and working collaboratively with schools to support pupils identified as being at risk of  permanent exclusion.

Inclusion Support Officer (ISO)

The role of the Inclusion Support Officer is to support children, young people and their parents during exclusion from school and the re-integration back to school. The ISO also works within a preventative remit to avoid permanent exclusion. The ISO works in collaboration with the pupil, parents and the school in order to support the pupil.

The ISO seeks to construct a holistic understanding of the child / young person’s current situation and the issues affecting them. Through understanding the whole picture, the ISO is able to guide and support effectively.

The ISO is able to offer:

  • visits to both home and school
  • individual support to the pupil
  • parenting support
  • practical advice on a wide range of issues
  • strategies for problem solving in school and at home
  • advocacy
  • mediation
  • signposting and referral
  • preparation for Governor Disciplinary Meetings

Systemic family psychotherapist and mental health development worker (SFP & MHDW)

The SFP and MHDW have 4 main areas to the role:


The SFP and MHDW can work with families, groups, couples or individuals. However, referrals have to demonstrate the impact of such work on children living within the household.

The children’s centres are used as a meeting venue. These have comfortable rooms set out for therapeutic sessions. The SFP and MHDW can meet with the family for up to a year and work can focus on whatever is going on with the family that is adversely impacting on the child or children.


The SFP and MHDW can supervise school staff to manage their caseload.  There is usually a meeting once a month. They can also work with headteachers and deputies in time of stress helping with complex cases. This service can be used flexibly. The SFP and MHDW will record each session and then give to school for their records.


The SFP and MHDW can offer bespoke training with staff as required. Examples of such training include:

  • ‘What makes a family tick? Exploring their scripts, stories & themes’
  • ‘Working with a ‘stuck’ case’
  • ‘Building and maintaining your relationship with a family’

The SFP and MHDW is trained through the University of Reading and Oxford Health to deliver the Psychological Perspective in Education and Primary Care (PPEP Care) training.  This includes 11 packages around mental heath to help support children and young people. The training is tailored to support school staff and is free of charge. The modules include:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • ASD
  • self-harm
  • behaviour difficulties

These enable staff to be aware and how to respond and support the child or young person. It also enables them to be able to signpost. This training can also be delivered in independent schools.


The SFP and MHDW  offers consultation for professionals working with difficult cases. The SFP and MHDW offers a space for professionals to discuss complex cases in detail, to generate new ideas and to plan ways forward that are underpinned by systemic practice and psychological theory.
